The True Impact of Gigabit Connections

In this this webinar the Fiber Broadband Association (KanREN is a member!) and RVA dive into evaluating the true value of gigabit internet speeds compared to lower bandwidth options. The conversation begins with an emphasis on the importance of adopting a scientific and evidence-based approach to understanding bandwidth needs, highlighting that current bandwidth demands might be understated. Research and testing reveal that upgrading from 60 megabits to gigabit speeds can significantly reduce wasted time, leading to substantial productivity gains. For instance, users on gigabit connections experience only a fraction of the time waste compared to those on slower connections, translating into notable financial benefits when valuing time at average or higher rates.

Further, the discussion explores the broader economic impacts of gigabit internet, including its potential to boost GDP by enhancing productivity, especially for remote workers. The session argues that bandwidth needs are continually evolving and that future applications will demand even higher speeds. Consequently, investing in gigabit infrastructure is seen as a strategic move to accommodate future technological advancements and ensure long-term efficiency. The talk concludes by advocating for higher bandwidth investments to support emerging applications like virtual reality and AI, which will become increasingly integral over the next decade.

KanREN and its Members have long understood the importance of having high speed and high availability network connectivity. This video does a great job of quantifying this in simple terms and drives home the impact and importance of having a good broadband network.
